Heavy Metal Machines is an electronic game of action and vehicular combat developed and published by Hoplon. The game is about highly armed cars competing in an arena, where the objective is to capture a bomb in the middle of it and then deliver it to the enemy team’s base three times. You have to do this while avoiding your enemies’ fire and all the hazards of the arena. The overall theme and music of the game is based on Heavy Metal and its culture. The game has been in production since 2013 and went through several changes ever since. The launch is expected for 2017.
One of the biggest inspirations for the game is the classic Rock’n’Roll Racing, published for arcade, super nintendo and mega-drive, developed by Blizzard (Interplay at the time), but also has influences from other arena based games like MOBAs, Rocket League and Twisted Metal.
Gameplay
Besides resembling a MOBA, Heavy Metal Machines does not follow the traditional meaning of this kind of game, especially for not having turrets, different lanes and minions, essential factors for defining a MOBA. Another point that differentiates Heavy Metal Machines from MOBAs is the pacing of the game, where battles happen with total strength from the very beginning of the match, without the need for levels or items to be able to destroy your opponents or deliver the bomb.
To control your vehicle, the player uses the mouse to accelerate or to go backwards, and the keyboard to fire the weapons. The vehicle always follows the direction where the mouse is pointing, which allows it to make curves and to aim your weapons at the opponents.
The objective of the game is to capture and deliver a bomb to the opponent’s base. To do so, the player carrying the bomb must go through the whole circuit, with very sharp turns and hazards everywhere, such as lava (lots of damage per second) and Droppers (special areas that forces the character to drop the bomb if he goes through it). Players that are not carrying the bomb may take shortcuts to get to the action faster so they can help or destroy the carrier. These shortcuts are closed if you are carrying the bomb.
